Flame’s Bonnie Lassie Cup Debut

The South Coast Flame Women’s team competed in what was their first-ever Bonnie Lassie Cup on Sunday at Ian McLennan Park. The side performed admirably especially for a young squad remaining unbeaten across the day earning two wins and a draw – conceding just one goal across the three games. This means they will now compete in the playoff of the competition this weekend.

Game 1 | South Coast Flame 0 Woonona 0

The Flame girls started the game at a fast pace against Wonoona and were eager to score early in the shortened format of the game. The Sharks proved to be a very well-organised defensive outfit playing a deep block which limited chances early. Quick combinations in the middle of the park unlocked space out wide which led to two clear opportunities that were not capitalised on. The Flame girls dominated possession and nullified the Wonoona counter-attack well. Sage Dixon made a great save to leave the game at 0-0 after the 24-minute period.

Game 2 | South Coast Flame 1 Tarrawanna 0

Game two started slowly as the Flame girls were challenged once more with a good defensive outfit limiting space centrally. Again, possession was controlled for the majority of the first half, however, none of the chances created were capitalised upon. In the second half, the girls came out with more energy and opened the scoring with an incisive run down the middle of the park and a well-weighted killer pass to the striker who tucked away the finish into the bottom corner.

Game 3 | South Coast Flame 6 Coniston 1

The final pool game saw the girls needing goals in order to try to top the group and go through to the Cup playoff. A lack of patience saw many chances created but not capitalised on early on in the first half. A change in formation and fresh legs saw some quick passing combinations centrally and out wide lead to numerous goals being scored. Coniston did not give up and scored a consolation late in the second half to make it 6-1.

The girls will now play Kiama in the first game of the Cup playoff next weekend.
