Everyone knows Debbie Hoyn as that hard-working administrator who ensures the season runs as seamlessly as possible. Who knew that Debbie was about to fulfill a childhood dream by representing Australia in Walking Football?
Debbie is an avid footballer and football mum who has game running through her veins. She was still running around till last year and only recently (due to nagging injuries) decided to slow it down a little and take up Walking Football. Her technical skills and ability to read the game caught the eye of selectors in some recent tournaments, and she was invited to trial for the national team. Whilst Debbie was a little surprised at her selection, she is immensely grateful for the opportunity. Debbie admits that, like every little girl, she too dreamed of representing her country in sport, and despite being a little over 50, has proven it is never too late.
Debbie is part of the “Forever Roos”, the Australian Women’s Over 50 Walking Football team, which is selected through the Walking Football Federation Australia (WFFA). She is one of seven players from NSW, with the rest of the squad from QLD and WA. They travel to Torrevieja, Spain, to compete in the World Nations Cup from 28 October.
The Forever Roos are pitted against England, France, Wales, Canada, hosts – Spain, and Hong Kong. Whilst the aim will be to make the semi-finals, Debbie is just out to enjoy the experience, although the Aussies are expected to fare well.
Debbie is not a stranger to Spain. Her son Liam has been in Spain playing football and living life for the past seven years, and only a couple of months ago got married there. Whilst Debbie’s roots are English, she is a true Aussie; however, she has a soft spot for Spain and is reasonably fluent in Spanish, which could be handy at this tournament.
On behalf of everyone at Flame, we congratulate Debbie on her selection and, of course, wish her all the very best in the tournament.
